  • With these tough economic times there are numerous businesses that are closing and moving, however, there’s been a reciprocal boom in new startups, with many who’ve had their careers derailed in Alberta’s downturn setting down fresh entrepreneurial roots.

    According to the city, over the first nine months of the year, some 6,176 new business licenses have been taken out, giving some hope to business leaders.  Many of these new businesses are working from home which presents its own challenges including work space.  So we wanted to give you a few DIY suggestions on how you can optimize your workspace.

     

  • 1. Stack Mason Jars

    Go to the dollar store and get five mason jars and hot glue them together in a pyramid as shown. Once dry tip on their side and use for spacious little cubbies for pens, pencils, staples, and other small items.

  • 2. Binder Clips To De-Tangle Cords

    Since we don't live in a wireless world yet a great way to help keep your wires from getting tangled up is to use binder clips.  Just clip them to the side of a desk to hold USB and other cables. Thread through the metal part to keep cords tangle free.

  • 3. Jelly Jar Storage

    Don't have much room on your desk but need some storage for your small items then hold on to some of your Jelly jars. Once their clean remove the desired shelf and place upside down on work surface. Space the lids two inches from another. Screw, nail, or hot glue the lid in place. Return to shelf and screw in jars.

  • 4. Peg Board

    Make your storage into some decorative like shown in the picture by framing a pegboard, painting it, add some hooks and then hang it above the desk to store items. The peg board can hold small items like scissors and tape.

  • 5. Re-Use An Old Shutter

    At Budget Storage we love the idea of re-purposing something used into something with a new function instead of filling up our landfills. One idea is to use an old shutter to hold pending or paid bills. Or use the top half as the inbox and the bottom half for out bound bills.

  • 6. Shoe Box Storage

    Bet you never thought you could use those shoe boxes for something other than storing some of your shoes, well we think they would make a great storage area for your business. Pin together shoe boxes with clips to store light books and papers. If you prefer to be more decorative, cover the shoe boxes in shelf lining or wrapping paper.

  • 7. Re-Purpose Magazine Holders

    Another repurpose idea for you, attach new or used magazine holders to a shelf to hold items. Paint or cover with shelf paper to match the room decor.

  • 8. Re-purpose Wall Brackets

    Re-purposed wall brackets make a lovely magazine, envelope, or paper holders. The fancy look will add a touch of class to your office at home or at work.

  • 9. Make a desk from Bookcases

    Turn bookcases and an old door into a beautiful desk with plenty of storage. The low bookcases provide plenty of storage to keep the desk clear of clutter.

  • 10. Cereal Box Drawer Dividers

    Those small packs of cereal boxes covered in shelf liner or wrapping paper make for great divided storage in a desk drawer. Use an Exacto knife to trim the boxes to suit the drawer and divide your desk drawer into sections so you can quickly find and keep your items organized.

  • 11. Hidden Desk

    Working out of a guest bedroom and want to keep the room looking nice for when guests come to stay.  Easy, just use two upright bookcases with hinges to make a lovely way to hide a desk. The desktop is designed to fold up when the desk is ready to close and your guests will be none the wiser. 

  • 12. Hanging Storage Bins

    I personally love this one and if you're a person who likes to use disinfectant wipes this idea is perfect for you too. To create this look re-purpose your disinfectant wipe containers by cutting them down and adding a hole as shown in the picture.  Get a piece of wood, paint it whatever colour matches with your decor and add some knobs so you can hang your containers.

  • 13. Re-Purpose An Old Window

    An old window can receive new life as a storage space for the office. Hang reminders and use the chalkboard for family reminders. The project can be completed in an afternoon.

  • 14. Mail Sorter

    Create a mail sorter with canvas. Those who sew will really love this idea. There are four categories to store bills or use as an in and out box.

  • 15. Wine Rack Organizer

    Re-purpose a wine rack into a beautiful organizer for your desk. Place empty cups into the spots that hold the wine. And use the cabinet above to store extra supplies.

  • 16. Office In A Chest

    Storage chests make for some beautiful decor in your house and they can also be used as a great storage area for your office files and supplies which will keep your home looking beautiful while still working as storage.
